This is little Orphan Andy. He is one of our Kinder Goats (cross between Pygmy and Nubian.) While his mother was carrying him she became ill. She stopped being able to walk. The problem wasn't an injury but was a chemical problem. I nursed and worked with her for probably about 6 weeks. Slowly she improved and then shortly, perhaps a week before it was time for her give birth she was back fully able to walk although she was still stiff legged. She gave birth with no problems. Although Orphan Andy also had some problems with his legs, he was not crippled. His legs were somewhat clubbed (turned inward) and they were shorter than his back legs. But he was a fighter as was his mother. He had already gotten up to some age though he was still young, when his mother had seizures that took her out quickly. This time there was nothing I could do for her. But Little Orphan Andy is something else. He is a character. My dad says he is ugly but I think he is cute. He has that tough attiude that I like. But at the same time he is tamer than many of our young goats.

A lot of books are about making money raising meat goats and such. The truth is that you aren't going to get rich raising goats. They are a lot of work and lot of pleasure. If you have land that is still needing clearing or you have pasture that needs to be kept worked, goats are a good animal to have.

I say, knock on the wood, they are generally a hardy animal. Although, like the situation with Andy's mother, things happen. And I know some people who have trouble raising goats because the pens had been over used with other animals and they couldn't get the worms under control. Being vigilant in keeping the Goats dewormed is probably the main health concern. I say that speaking in general from our experience.

If you have a buck with a few Does you will be amazed at how quickly they can reproduce. We started out with two Does and a wether. Wethers are good to have with your Does when you don't have a Buck in the herd. My sister brought us a buck. He increased the size of our herd a small amount. She took that buck back. Then from the three Does born plus the two Does we had, when she brought another Buck up things began to get our of control for us. Before we knew it, we had over 70 goats.

I got a halter on our youngest filly Missy. Petted and loved on her. It really was no problem at all. Of course the other horses wanted to help.

BellSouth has pissed me off big time......Last month I had some shady character in our store from HellSouth talking about how he could "save me money." What he proposed would have cost me money and I told him no thanks. Then the next month I get a notice (a very poorly written notice right before the Labor Day Weekend.) They intend to go up on our toll-free numbers by what amounts to $40 a month. I felt and still feel that this was in violation of our three year package agreement.

Before you go to the polls to vote Repbulican I suggest you consider. Would you rather see Janet Jackson's naked breast or a continued increase in your phone, utility, and travel expenses. That seems to be the choice between voting Republican or Democrat.

But don't get me wrong. I am still an Independent. And a lot of times I do complain about too much government regulation. But BellSouth is not just the worst enemy of its customers. It is its own worst enemy. Regulators really need to take a hand to try to save it and AT&T from themselves.

Back on the topic of goats. We recently had a new one born. A total live wire but not the most steady on her feet. Dad had the goats out grazing while I was working the store. I get a call. The little baby goat has fallen down in the creek bed, a gully area over 6 foot deep. This is a real rough area below the damn. Dad heard it crying back and forth to the mother goat and located about where it was. Only it crawled under the bank into a a real small cave/tunnel area washed from beneath the bank. I come home from the store leaving things to Barbara and Alice. I get a ladder and crawl down into the mud and see where it is. Luckily it isn't where it can go deeper beneath the bank and I manage to get it to hand up to dad. We were lucky that dad was with them when they were still calling back and forth. Once the nanny goat lost interest there was silence. The little kid seems to be doing good.

I think Gilmore Girls and also Everwood tried to sort accomplish the same flavor that Northern Exposure had while staying within the premise of their own concepts.
