Spence Calley, Martha N. Jameson, Gurdy Duboise, and George Duboise sat in the police station. Martha felt embarrassed.  She was normally the one doing the questioning, but now D.A. Jake Douglas had her sitting in the police station like a common criminal. And to make matters worse, he had the man she had arrested only hours earlier about to start the questioning. How the hell was she supposed to know that Joe Smith was actually an undercover cop. It wasn’t like it had been her idea to arrest him.  Jake Douglas is the one who had put the evidence in her hand and had made it impossible for her not to arrest him. She could only wonder what kind of game Joe and Jake were playing.

Gurdy looked at Spence.  She stood up and walked over to where she would be seated next to him.  She whispered to him, "Do you know why we were hauled to the police station?  I'm sure Rus would not have called the police on us. Or would he?  Why are we here?"

Without bothering to whisper, Spence stated, "I don't know why the police intercepted us as I was pulling into my driveway. But Rus wouldn't have known that we were coming to Savannah. And he doesn't know who I am. At least I wouldn't think he would know who I am."

Martha looked at Gurdy.  She then looked at Spence.  She picked up a copy of SaySexy Mystery Reports and handed it to Spence. She asked Spence, "Why wouldn't you automatically assume that the Sammy Williams case is why you are sitting here? I mean, what else are you involved in?"

Spence handed the rag sheet off to Gurdy. "I'm not involved in any case! And why would the police insist that Gurdy and George come to the station with me? Can you imagine being about to entertain out of town guest and then you and they are hauled down to the police station?" Spence shook his head in anger and gritted his teeth. "I've told the police everything I know about Sammy Williams. I don't know who killed him."

Martha said, "I believe you. But I am sure the Sammy Williams case is why we are sitting here."

Spence stared at Martha. "You are a police officer.  They are going to question you as though you are a lowly witness or suspect?"

"I don't know why I am sitting here any more than you do," Martha whined as she heard the ominous squeak of a door knob.  Martha felt sick to her stomach as she turned and saw the door open. She frowned and took a deep breath as Jake leaned out the doorway and motioned for her to come to the interrogation room. Slowly, she walked back to the room like she was walking a minefield and each step might be her last. As she entered the room, she looked at the mirrored wall. Joe was positioned behind the mirrored wall where she couldn’t see him, but she knew he was there. She had overheard a short bit of conversation between Joe and Jake.  Martha sat down at a table positioned up against the mirrored wall.  She squirmed in the uncomfortable wooden chair as the lights dimmed and the speaker above her squealed a pitched feedback. Then she heard Joe’s disguised voice.

Joe asked, “Who do you think murdered Sammy Williams?”

Martha shook her head. She stated, “The evidence which Jake gave me gave me no choice but to arrest you, Joe.  Now, what the shit is this about?”

Joe opened the door from where he had been hidden and came into the room with Martha. He looked at Martha and then he looked at Jake.  “Yeah, what the shit is this about.  Your mother-in-law works for some lawyer trying to say that Sammy was going to sue me for sexual harassment.  Then you make the collar and arrest me for murder.”

“My mother-in-law had no idea what was going on between her boss and Sammy.  She had Sammy arrested. She’d found him in the office, going through a desk, where she works.  It seemed to her he was a burglar. Her boss comes up with some bullshit to make her think she had made a mistake. Sammy ends up dead. And my mother-in-law ends up being fished out of a river and then put in psychiatric ward. Then you two creeps have the nerve to bring me in here as though I’m the criminal.”

Joe said, “So you are saying that you and your husband are not in this together.”

“What the fuck are you talking about? In what?”

“Espionage. Murder!”

“I think you need to visit my mother-in-law.  If you think my husband is involved in espionage or murder, you belong in the nut house.” Martha then turned and looked at Jake, “Why did you want me to arrest Joe?  Did you get some pleasure out of trying to embarrass me?”

“We can’t let Roy Rubbers and your husband know that we are on to them.  We need your help, but we’ve got to make sure that we can trust you.”

“And if you decide you can’t trust me?”

“Police shootings happen all the time.”

“Are you threatening me?”

“No.  If we can’t trust you, then we will dope you up so that you cannot talk, and we will put you in intensive care. The news will lead off with a story of how you were shot.”

“This is America!  I have rights.  You can’t do that.”

“Do you really want to be in a position where might lose your pension or might even face criminal charges?”

“This is unreal.  Are you responsible for what happened to my mother-in-law?”

“No.  We think your husband and Roy Rubbers did that.”
