Spence, Gurdy, and George sat together in the busy waiting area while Martha remained in the interrogation room. Suddenly, Gurdy and George saw the same ghostly specters, the two phantom children, who had demanded that they release Rus. In disbelief they saw Steed and Molly appear before them.
Steed whispered in thought to them, "Don't be afraid of us. The reason you are here is because we whispered in thought so as to cause a police officer to bring you here. Martha needs your help and your mother and sister need help. The four of you need to work together because your enemies are the same."
Steed and Molly vanished just as a police officer walked up. He told Spence, Gurdy, and George that he was sorry. "There was one huge foul up in dispatch. The three of you should not have been brought down to the station. I will drive you back to your home, if you like."
Gurdy thanked him. "I appreciate your offer, but if it is okay with Martha Jameson I would like for her to drive us back to Spence's home."
Martha came out of the interrogation room. Her fellow police officer standing in front of Gurdy motioned for her to join them. He told Martha the situation. "I know you are going through a lot right now, but would you mind driving these three back to Spence's home. They were hauled down here by mistake and they would like for you to drive them home."
Martha looked at Spence. At this point Martha tended to suspect a hidden agenda, even behind a simple request. She started to tell the officer she couldn't when she heard a strange whispering thought. She said, "I must be losing my mind, but sure, I will drive them back to Spence's house."
Gurdy smiled and pointed to the room where Martha had been. "I take it things didn't go too well in there."
Martha shook her head. "I no longer feel I can trust anyone. I am even beginning to doubt myself and the decisions I make. I don't know what I am going to do." Then Martha rolled her eyes. "Why am I telling you this?"
George said, "We are strangers to you. There is no reason that you should trust us. But maybe there is a reason that we were thrown together."
Martha frowned. "That reason is why I hesitate and I am afraid. I don't like being manipulated."
The other police officer said. "Look, I can drive them home."
Gurdy stood up and said, "Maybe that would be best." Then she reached and took Martha's hand. "I think it would be helpful to both of us if when you are feeling better about things, for us to talk."
Martha asked, "About what?"
"Someone suggested to me that we have common enemies."
Nervously, Martha laughed. "Up until today, I didn't even realize I had any enemies."
